The desk

Pick a pen, an ink and a paper. Write. Everything on this desk behaves like the real thing: wet ink shines, then goes matt; cotton drinks, coated paper waits.

The tools

Pen
Writes with the nib you chose. Slow strokes are wetter and wider; quick strokes are drier and finer.
Water
A drop of water on wet ink. It blooms out like watercolour.
Blotter
Press and lift. It takes the extra ink and leaves the page drier, with a mirrored print on the blotter.
A day later
Only for Gall Black. Slide it to see where iron-gall ink ends up once it has oxidised.

Things to try

  1. Write the same word on Rag, then on Glaze. Look at the edges.
  2. Burin on Glaze, pressing on every down-stroke. Watch the pools.
  3. Harbour Blue, a slow full stop, then tilt your phone.
  4. Gall Black on Rag, then slide “a day later”.
  5. A drop of water on a wet Moss line.
  6. Any ink on Washi. Then turn the sheet over.
