Rag
Cotton paper, 120 g/m². Soft to the touch, a little tooth under the nib, and thirsty. Ink goes in, not on.

The paper
Rag is made from cotton fibre, the way the best writing paper was made before wood pulp. The fibres are long and open, so ink runs into them along the grain.
That gives every line a soft edge, a little feathering you see up close, and a page that is dry almost as soon as you lift the pen. Left-handers like it for that.
It is the paper for letters you want to keep and for iron-gall ink, which bites into cotton and stays.
Good with: Every nib. Best with Gall Black and Sepia.
Our inks on Rag
- Gall Black
Bites into the cotton and stays put. The line spreads a little and darkens evenly.
- Harbour Blue
A clean, dark blue. The cotton drinks most of the sheen.
- Ember
A soft orange line. Most of the gold sinks into the fibres.
- Moss
Quiet and even. The cotton evens out the shading.
- Sepia
Settles into the cotton. Soft edges, archival look.

Drying, compared
| Paper | Dry to the touch | Spread | Show-through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rag | about 4 s | The line spreads about 15% past the nib | None |
| Glaze | about 10 s | Crisp — the line stays at nib width | None |
| Washi | about 2 s | The line spreads about 6% past the nib | Shows on the back |
Wider nibs and wetter inks take longer everywhere. Gall Black keeps darkening long after it is dry.
