How it writes

Gold is softer than steel, and the Burin nib is cut long and thin so it can move. Write lightly and you get a clean, fine line. Press on a down-stroke and the two tines part; the line swells, then closes again as you lift.

That swell is what old copperplate hands are built on. It takes a week to learn and a lifetime to get bored of. Go slowly at first: flex wants a patient hand and a wet ink.

On Glaze the swelled strokes pool at the edges and show the ink’s sheen. On Rag they spread a little into the cotton and look soft, like a pen from another century.

The Burin writing its own name, live, in Gall Black on Glaze.
